This handout will help your ESL students review the passive voice and the verb ‘make’ to describe how, where, or when something was manufactured. The passive voice is used in English is used to express what is done to someone or something; the most important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence.

  1. We use ‘made + preposition’ when we talk about how something is manufactured. We usually use ‘is made’, which is the passive voice form of make.
  2. It is used to specify the type of material, or what something consists of, or where or by whom it was produced.
  3. To explain the specifications in Part 2, we need to add prepositions such as, made from, made in, made by, made of.
    e.g. The tatami mats are made of compressed and woven straw by craftspeople in Japan.
