In the Odd One Out activity students work together to decide and explain why one of four things is the odd one out. Higher level students can be creative with their answers so it’s entertaining for the other students when sharing the reasons afterwards. Not only should you get some interesting ideas, but being able to justify a choice and explain reasoning is an important skill for your students to practice.
Example objects/words
chicken duck airplane pigeon
Possible reasons why it is the ‘odd one out’
An airplane is a machine.
An airplane is bigger than a chicken, a duck or a pigeon.
You can’t eat an airplane.
