Smartphone applications put people directly in contact with workers such as, drivers and teachers, who accept a job on a short-term basis (a gig). This style of work, added to the rise in independent contractors or freelance work, means many people around the world are no longer seen as employees but as self-employed, and therefore are not entitled to benefits such as holiday, maternity, and sick pay.
