Japanese companies have developed a plastic that can be used to make shopping bags that degrade in seawater to help reduce plastic waste in the oceans. Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Kaneka Corporation created functional materials referred to as marine biodegradable plastics drawing on the same mechanism by which microorganisms dissolve garbage in soil.
