In October the Japanese government increased consumption tax from 8% to 10%, at the same time, they started a scheme to promote the use of cashless payments. Cashless payments include credit and debit cards, as well as IC transit cards, virtual wallets and payment apps that use QR codes. Japanese customers now have a bewildering number of different ways to pay for items.
